Join us to honor the life and work of the 1964 Nobel Laureate and 2005 Templeton Laureate, Dr. Charles H. Townes, whose research led to the discovery of the laser. This event is being cosponsored by the U.C. Berkeley Department of Public Health and the Berkeley-based nonprofit, the International Institute of the Bengal and Himalayan Basins, or IIBHB, and the Taste of the Himalayas Restaurant. Dr. Townes, who has been the friend and adviser of the IIBHB for the past ten years, will present his agenda for the future of the institute and what will be required of its supporters. At this event, Ms. Monica Burdhan of Calcutta, Cofounder of the IIBHB in India, will present Dr. Townes with a plaque of appreciation on behalf of the Indian people. Our speakers include the 1978 and 1996 Nobel Laureates in Physics, Arno Penzias whose research lead to the proof of the Big Bang theory of the birth of our universe and Douglas Osheroff who was acknowledged for his discoveries in superfluidity. IIBHB founder, Charles H. Townes Professor of Water and Environmental Chemistry, Dr. Rashbihari Ghosh, will also speak.

The International Institute of the Bengal and Himalayan Basins is committed to the bettering of drinking-water resources around the world. We realize that our mission will succeed only with a mutual exchange of local and international knowledge and respect, so we bring together scholars of diverse nations and disciplines in the sciences, humanities, and religion to ensure the best possible understandings between peoples. Currently we are gathering direct human data on arsenic poisoning in the Bengal Basin, the worst toxic crisis in human history affecting over 300 million people.
